Stomatitis is defined as a condition that causes painful swelling and sores inside the mouth. Stomatitis can appear anywhere in the mouth. There are different types of stomatitis which include canker sores, cold sores, or mouth irritations. Canker sores occur on the mucous membrane inside the mouth. They tend to happen on young children and teen and are seen less frequently on adults. Canker sores are not contagious and tend to go away in a few days. Cold sores are also called fever blisters, they usually occur on the lip and are sores filled with fluid. After the blister breaks you usually see crust around the site. These blisters or sores tend to heal without leaving a scar and they are contagious. Mouth irritations can be from chewing tobacco, biting of the cheek, having gum disease, burning of tongue or roof of the mouth from hot foods or drinks, taking certain type of medication. There is no exact point of reference to where canker sores come from but there is some link to them. Stress, trauma to the mouth, medication, bacteria or viruses can be some factors that can cause canker or. Cold sores are caused by a virus (HSV) herpes simplex virus. Cold sores can be spread from person to person. There is no exact treatment for canker or cold sores, they tend to go away within a week or two after they begin to show up. But there is some ways to relieve the pain from the sores. For cold sores you can avoid hot liquids, apply cold sore ointments, or take some pain relievers. For Canker sores you can rinse with warm salt water, maintain good oral hygiene, you can also use cold sore ointments.
